"The minute you finally get your head together, your body starts falling apart." So true. Happy birthday!

First let me say, Happy Birthday.

Second, let me say: "Did you know you can sing 'happy birthday' to the tune of 'The Star Spangled Banner'?" (Third: you're welcome.)

Fourth, I'm a bad person ... I know what "raw-dogged". I feel like I should apologize to someone. (In fairness, I did have to look up "felcher"; Sean Bean was right.)

Also, given where you live, I'm sure there are plenty of things that are mid-century; 13th century, but still mid.

I confess that, being enough years older than you that I have to take off one of my shoes to count them all (I no longer wear socks), while I appreciate the opportunity to continue breathing, I take less and less pleasure in my own age group. So, for me, while getting older is a blessing, being older is not.

So get off my lawn.

I don't know what's funny--the idea of YOU, of all folks, being a "bad person" or you telling everyone to get off your lawn. Thank you for my birthday wishes, Gares. I continue to believe that 2022 is going to be YOUR year. Really excited about your manuscript. About damn time some good shit finally happened, right?

Fixed the part that needed fixing, so I'm on to the synopsis (which I keep accidentally calling the "syllabus" ... )

Stacey, thank you, Happy Birthday! and damn that gluten ;-(

Your essay comes just in time to forward to my two children (mid 20s) who are in the throes of making good lives for themselves. To hear their side of the story, they share the road with some toxic and annoying fellow travellers who are um, challenging. And not to put it all on "those others", Item #8 "Clean up your side of the aisle" resonates particularly with some of their recent stories. I've been fortunate to not have a lot of toxic crud clogging the gears of my life. But I remember that day 35 years ago when I realized that if I didn't want to hear the same whingeing from the same work colleague for another year, I needed to find someone else to eat lunch with. So, I moved to another table and my digestion improved. As for the other nine ideas, maybe I'll share those in another email. ~~Barbara

You are such a powerhouse of a human. I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again. You see EVERYTHING. I love following your family's colorful hijinks, which are always the kinds of adventures bright talented people have. I'm so glad you're on this planet.

Happy belated birfday!! Yeah, getting older rocks, and not just because it beats the alternative. Getting older correlates with the declining functioning of your give-a-fuck, which means that you slowly learn that the things you may have worried about in your younger days really don't matter in the way you once thought they did.

You may have spent your life worrying about what people think about you, until you realize how little people actually do. We're all so wrapped up in our own crap that we have little space/time to think of others. Yeah, we're all just that self-absorbed.

I'm sorry you were bitten by the gluten monster. I've a friend who has Celiac Disease, and that shit sucks. May you recover quickly.

My own birthday is on the 18th, and I know that one of the things I'm grateful for this year is your friendship and counsel. It means more than you know. :-)

I feel EXACTLY the same about you, Jack. Your brains and talent are hugely appreciated and your heart is obvious to anyone who reads your brilliant work. "Getting older correlates with the declining functioning of your give-a-fuck"--that alone is T-shirt worthy. And it's certainly been my experience so far. I'm damned glad I know you.
