I've only seen the movie once, but I loved it and fully understand why it's gained cult status. The Dude is an icon, there are plenty of memorable one-liners, and John Goodman was outstanding. Someday I may even watch it again...and I HATE re-watching movies.

I would drive you batshit. I see movies again and again and AGAIN. It’s borderline psychotic.

On Roger Ebert’s defense (may he Rest In Peace), he did elaborate on his first review. He wrote “Although some may say the movie goes in all directions but doesn’t end up anywhere, well, that’s not a flaw. That’s the movie’s main charm. I concur. And that’s like, uh, my opinion man!

Roger wasn't a bad old salt. Back when I worked with Russ Meyer, he and Roger did a screenplay called THE BRA OF GOD, and I was slated to play God's wife. As much as I might have enjoyed acting in that movie, I'm REALLY glad it never happened, because Meyer and I would have been at each other's throats.

Favorite scene: scattering the ashes. Part of what makes it so funny to me is that, even the very first time I watched the film, I saw that one coming. And I still died laughing. I'm laughing so hard right now I can hardly type because I've got tears in my eyes.

I think I always liked BL, but I never saw it in the theater. So when I did see it, it was on video which means I'd already begun cultivating a habit of watching closely (when I bothered to watch at all.) And one of the things I saw in Lebowski was the shade of Los Angeles "hard boiled." (I mean, who makes a smart-ass crack when thugs are giving you a swirly?) Anyway, it kept me going back to it, though no where near as often as you.

The thing that took me forever to begin to appreciate was Monty Python. Now, if someone accidentally says the wrong thing or drops the wrong cue, I'll spontaneously break into the Lumberjack Song.

I love the idea of you laughing that hard! Yes, that scene is utter perfection, all the more so because I used to hang out on Leo Carrillo all the time.

Ha! You and I had the same initial reaction. I saw it in theaters, and if memory serves, TBL was their follow-up to Fargo. I was expecting something like Fargo. TBL is not Fargo. All these years later, I am now a certificate-wielding, card-carrying, ordained Dudeist Priest. Keep the faith!
