I laughed hysterically at the new mother's birth plan. I worked in maternity in a major metro hospital stateside. When I say major I mean 6000 births/year. Seen it all. The minute a woman came in with a birth plan we KNEW she was f**ked. In 7 years I never saw one go according to plan. We used to laugh at the nurses station. They'd come in with Playlist, maribu peignoirs, pillows and etc.. I always wanted to ask where the sherpa were.

Here's the quote for those women.

Man proposes, God disposes.

I bet you've got stories for days. DAYS. There's nothing cuter or more clueless than a new mom, is there? I was that clueless new mom, once upon a time. But you learn reaaaaalll fast.

I like your quote.

Exactly. Because if it doesn’t, all I’ve got is “Doo be doo be doo.” - Sinatra 😝

"To thine ownself be true." (Easier said than done - it implies we must know ourselves VERY well)

Polonius to his son Laertes. Act 1, Scene 3, I believe. A fabulous piece of writing--and advice.

The Mike Tyson quote may actually be a very old saw from boxing generally. The version I heard was from the 1996 film, "The Ghost and The Darkness." Michael Douglass speaking to Val Kilmer's character, "Every fighter has a plan until he gets hit. Well, you just got hit. The question now is, do you get back up?" (Pretty good movie. If anything, the film *understates* the insanity of the hunt between Paterson and these two lions.)

I was also reminded of a Whitehead quote (Whitehead being frequently mentioned as the most oft quoted and least read of western philosophers): "Seek simplicity, and distrust it."

"We are, if nothing else, a breathtaking mosaic of the battles we’ve lost and won."

There is a sentence I want to steal, and then use with promiscuous abandon.

Now, see, that makes more sense. Tyson would have watched any film about boxing, and I'm sure that's where he picked it up.

Anything you hope to use with "promiscuous abandon" or any kind of abandon is A-okay with me :-)

Well, the film only mentions the line, it is not about boxing per se. (It is about a real event during the construction of the rail line from Mombassa to what would become Nairobi. A pair of male lions, one with a white mane ("the Ghost") and the other with a black mane ("the Darkness") attacked the construction team at the site of the bridge construction over the river gorge at Tsavo. It got so bad that the entire construction was shut down for some weeks. Patterson was eventually able to hunt them both down. After many years as rugs, he donated the skins to Field Museum in Chicago. His account can be read here: https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.37068/page/n7/mode/2up

Noooooo! To me, lions are just giant kitties. Kitties that will straight up kill you, perhaps, but I can't read about them being slaughtered on account of my "allergies."

The area around Tsavo was a trade route for caravans, so not even a majority of the dead were from the railway workers. But when the den was finally located, there were remains of well over 130 people found within. The movie plays with the numbers, but at least 3 dozen workers on the railroad were carried off by one or both of the pair.
